Best of You

Georgie Girl is my favorite Tumblr account by far. She’s an Aussie living in NYC who frequently blogs/tumbles on fashion, books, NYC and travel. She’s also an accountant in love with pink and polka dots. Reminds me a lot of my former college roommate. I read her daily. Of all the blogs related to fashion I read, her outfits are the most accessible.

Every Little Step

photo_nicole_davis_image_2I started training this morning for Race for the Cure on Oct. 4. I really shouldn’t have to train for a race that’s only 3 miles, but if I had to pick my third unhealthiest habit (coffee and sugar consumption being one & two), it’s been my total lack of exercise this year. I originally had hoped to run the Bolder Boulder this year, but not even close. It’s not as impressive as running the NYC marathon, but still daunting to me.

Komen Denver is a client, and through my working with them, I’ve gotten to meet Nicole Davis. Nicole was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 25 while she was six-months pregnant. Nicole gave birth to beautiful Abigail on April 4 of this year, who I’ve also been lucky enough to meet. I love talking to Nicole because despite her struggles, she is full of positive energy. It helps me keep my crappy days in perspective because nothing I’m facing is as daunting as breast cancer. Nicole is continuing her fight and will be undergoing her chemo treatments until 2010. I’m helping to captain Nicole’s team.

If you’re around on Oct. 4, I’d love to have you on my team. You can register here and look for the team Beautiful Spirit Walkers. You can also donate on my personal page if you’d like! I’m 20 percent to my goal of raising $500. I also donated that money, but whatevs. I’m hoping I can raise the full amount.

This Fated Dissonance

When you start following people’s blogs, especially the people you’ve never met before, you often become wrapped up in their lives.

One such blog for me (and a whole lot of other people) is NieNie. We’re about the same age. She has four beautiful children and a husband. I can’t keep a plant alive. She’s devout to her faith, and I’m a lapsed Catholic at best. She is the most crafty person I’ve ever “known,” and I can’t even use the bedazzler I bought in jest.

In her ordinary instant, the plane her husband was flying crashed, and she obtained burns over 80 percent over her body.

Her life was the life of fairy tales. The stuff that Martha Stewart said was possible, but you never believed. Ever. But then you’d read blog posts like the amazing back-to-school banquet she’d plan for her kids or the kind of holidays she’d put together. I went back and read every blog post she ever wrote. She inspired me with the way she found and created beauty out of everything, the absolute depth of her love for her husband and children and how she savored every moment.

But if I found her life totally inspiring before the plane crash, I find her a thousand times more so. That her life is still perfect, but she’s learned to change her definition of perfect. She still adheres to the values and principles she held previously, even when it’s a thousand times harder to do so. She fights just as hard. And she’s just as beautiful as before.  And this year, she still put together an amazing back-to-school banquet for the kids.

So here’s to you NieNie! To inspiring me to savor the precious moments and to live a better life.

New Year's Resolutions / Comments

If August was focused on being a month of culture and non-stop fun, September is going to be decidely less so. September’s theme is going to be organization. As you can imagine, I can muster no true enthusiasm for September. As you can imagine, this is a decidely boring blog post. But…if I bore you and write it out, it guarantees that I am somewhat more accountable for it. Somewhat. Pretty much September means making responsible choices. But if I add some exclamation points and the word fun to it, maybe it won’t be so bad. Plus, I have Jackie’s visit to look forward to the last week of September.

Sept. 6 – Laundry fun! Clean the inside of my car and trunk fun!

Sept. 8 – Clean my apt fun!

Sept. 12 – Clean out a bunch of boxes out of my storage unit fun! Organize my mail fun!

Sept. 13 – Clean my closet and go to good will fun!

Sept. 19 – Take all my boxes to my storage unit fun!

Sept. 20 – Get organized financially fun!

Little Hermione Granger all grown up in the new Burberry ads. I love trench coats coupled with the tousled hair and kohl eyeliners. I’d try to duplicate the look as I own 5 trench coats, but as Alexis says, it’s hard not to look rode hard and put away wet with that combo.

I love, love, love corsets/bustiers with tulle. I think it’s because I still harbor a secret desire to grow up and be a ballerina. You can see more outtakes from the Vanity Fair photoshoot of rich kids heirresses presumptive here.
